Hypnosis is one of the most misunderstood and under-utilised healing ...
![]() Hypnosis is one of the most misunderstood and under-utilised healing tools available. John Dutton, a leading researcher, explains why. I have spent 15 years researching hypnosis as a healing tool, and working face-to-face with over 11 000 people. This simple but effect healing tool is not understood by most. Misconceptions of it being a means of 'controlling others', being a process 'sent from the devil', or a method of getting a person to 'dance on a table or bark like a dog' all contribute to a damaging body of myths. One of the first recorded usages of hypnosis as a healing tool dates back over 2 000 years to the Sleep Temple at Thebes, Egypt, where priests are depicted inducing a trance in a patient. In 1958 this methodology was accepted as a valid medical therapy in the UK and the USA. So hypnosis has been around for a long time, and has even been scientifically proven. Despite advances made, hypnotherapy has yet to reach its full status in countries such as ours, due to legislative restrictions and religious and cultural fears. ![]() So what is hypnosis? In lay terms it is a tool that enables you through relaxed focus to present suggestions to the subconscious mind to override an imprinted negative behaviour. To give a contemporary analogy, if your computer is not performing to your liking you re-program it. Our subconscious mind is our 'computer program', so to say. All our embedded patterns, feelings and behaviours are on this program. Hypnosis is a tool to help one change a negative to a positive. In order to put new information into the subconscious we have to lift the lid briefly taking the conscious mind out of the equation. Nearly all hypnosis takes place when we cycle the brain down into the alpha states of approximately 7-14 cycles/second (Herz) and sometimes down into theta states of 4-7 Herz. To put this into perspective, in our alert state we operate at 14-20 Herz. This is known as the beta mind state, wherein the conscious mind is very active. So what will it feel like? It differs from person to person but is always very relaxing and pleasant and safe. Removing old patterns Let's say we attend a good motivational speaker's talk. We feel wonderful, ready to take on the world, but a few days later we are back into the old negative state, having lost all that positive mind energy. Another example would be going on diet to lose weight; as soon as we stop the diet we go back to our old eating ways and put on weight again. In both examples the conscious mind has listened to what's needed or wanted. But to create a long-lasting effect, we need to consult the subconscious not the conscious mind, remembering that the subconscious is the underlying 'computer program' that in reality controls our patterns of activities feeling, thought and action. That's why hypnotherapy is such an effective tool in giving direct instructions to the subconscious that will then relay it to the conscious. Daydreaming vs hypnosis If you can daydream, you can use hypnosis. In fact, a common example is we travel back and forth to work. If asked to say what colour cars you passed on the way, or how many traffic lights you stopped at, the common response would be: 'I don't know.' The conscious programmed behaviour was driving the car and the subconscious programmed behaviour was thinking about what you were going to say in the meeting at the office or whatever our minds might dwell upon, while the 'automatic' behaviour of driving in traffic was happening. There are very few people who cannot effectively use hypnosis in some way. Control Another common hypnosis myth is the idea that, 'I am far too much of a control-freak to be hypnotised'. In fact, the more focused you are, the easier it is to use hypnosis. It is, for example, generally easier to work with people who play sport or a musical instrument, or who work with figures. The fear of 'loss of control' usually stems from stage shows you may have seen where you are left thinking, 'No-one is going to control me and make a fool out of me'. Remember this: all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis; the therapist is trained to guide you to the correct techniques and processes, but you are the one doing the hypnosis to yourself. The people taking part in the stage show know where they are, what is happening and they are not 'out of control', merely open to suggestions. They will only forget if the hypnotist tells them to and they are comfortable to do that. It's worth noting that the average stage hypnotist has only a few days training in hypnosis, and a strong stage personality, and can only work with highly susceptible people and people who want to be on the stage. A hypnotherapist, on the other hand, undergoes months and years of learning and can assist all levels of susceptibility. Their purpose is also to help people create positive change and not use them for entertainment. Our organisation's certified and properly-trained hypnotherapists work under a strict code of ethics and values, and are not stage performers, but therapists. You don't 'go under' One of the most confused ideas about hypnosis is that you 'go under', much as you would go under anaesthetic. This is, in a word, simply wrong. You go into hypnosis rather like one goes into meditation or day-dreaming; there is no knock-out effect. What is hypnotherapy used for? It must be noted that it is not a panacea, nor does it work for everyone, but research shows a high success rate in many areas when undertaken by a trained professional. It is not a quick-fix and, like any other therapy, takes effort from both the therapist and client, so don't expect to change a 30-year-old behaviour in one session. I believe people watching stage shows are influenced by this expectation. The areas I have researched and worked in include: smoke cessation, weight control, nail biting, bed wetting, stress, depression, sleep disorders, pain control, sexual problems (non-medical), sports improvement, study problems, speech problems, lack of self-confidence, phobias, forensics and assisting trauma victims. Every disease, sickness or negative event in one's life has a link to stress and anxiety. So hypnotherapy can help in some way with almost every conceivable scenario and works very well in conjunction with other tools such as medication and psychotherapy. We are normally able to assist people from the age of six years old upwards. Hypnotherapy utilises a natural ability we all have, it's safe in trained hands, non-addictive, enjoyable and it's yours to use.
WISDOM THROUGH THE MIND In this modern day world people tend to protect and hide knowledge, I plan to share mine with others so they too can help in this negative stressed world. My years of research and working enable me to teach from experience, not from others workings or experiences.
