HH Dalai Lama Tsug Lakhang Temple complex and residence in Mcleod Ganj |
Meet Great Living MastersHH Dalai Lama, Tenzin Palmo, HH Karmapa
September 2013Arrive Delhi sun 1 September. Visit to the Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Depart from Delhi fri 13 September.
12 nights: 2 nights overnight train, 5 in Dharamsala, 3 in Palampur, 2 Lake Tso Pema.
Norma Levine describes this magical valley accurately in her book The blessing power of the Buddhas:
“The Kangra valley has for thousands of years been home to masters of enlightenment.
The renowned yogi Tilopa inhabited a waterfront cave and the Tantric Buddha Padmasambhava –
Guru Rinpoche - transformed fire into water and left footprints on the rock.
So it is a valley long accustomed to miraculous display
and there is radiance in the air, a sparkle in the water, a lightness like laughter in the elements.”
The focus of this pilgrimage will be to meet Great Living Masters and to visit sacred places of pilgrimage. The snowy Himalayas as backdrop to green valleys and sparkling streams. In between there is time to enjoy beautiful scenery, walks, shopping for books, shawls, dharma objects, jewellery and much more.
A great privilege and experience of a life-time will be to:
Sit at the feet of THE great spiritual icon of our contemporary world: HH the 14th Dalai Lama.
3-5 September: HHDL will teach on Shantideva’s famous text:
A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life.
3 & 4 September two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon;
last session am 5 September.- The HEART of the pilgrimage: Visit Tenzin Palmo at her fabulously modern nunnery Dongyu Gatsal Ling. Established in 1999, the exquisite temple has just been consecrated. We will spend the day there and be able to sit in on chanting of the nuns. Lunch with Jetsunma.
- Visit to Tenzin Palmo’s root teacher: Khamtrul Rinpoche at Tashi Jong, also the home of the Togden yogis. TenzinPalmo is training some of the nuns in the near-extinct tradition of Togdenma.
- Public teaching of HH the 17th Karmapa at Guyto monastery where HH lives as a guest of HHDL ever since his brave escape from Tibet in 2000. Possible private audience.
- Visit to Sherab Ling (place of wisdom): the amazing monastery complex of HE the 12th Tai Situpa.
- Visit to Bir and the projects of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche.
- Travel up into the mountains to sacred Lake Tso Pema at Rewalsar where Guru Rinpoche transformed the fire that was to burn him into a lake. India and Tibet are renowned for sacred lakes and caves where yogis and yoginis live and meditate. It is a rare and unforgettable journey to visit such a place and experience the living dharma. Highly recommended.
- Visits around quaint Mcleod Ganj and Dharamsala including the fabulous Norbulinka Art Centre where we will see Tibetan artists at work painting thankas etc, stroll in the beautiful gardens, and have an exquisite lunch. Thosamlinginternational nunnery, the Library of Tibetan Works and archives and home of the Nechung oracle, the Astro Medical Institute where you can have your horoscope done, the Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) providing education and craft training for 1000s of mostly orphaned children, St John in the Wilderness church established in the 1800s and much more.

Experience: Erika has taken pilgrimages to India since 1994, including four Kagyu Monlam prayer meetings with HH Karmapa in BodhGaya, several journeys to Dharamsala and the Kangra Valley, and three wonderful 14-day retreats at Bodhicharya Meditation Centre in Sikkim with Ringu Tulku. Erika invited Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo to South Africa for her historic visit in 2007. On 25 December 2011 at the Karmapa 900 celebrations in Delhi, HH Karmapa greeted her with three words: “Great Tour Leader . . .” |
